At Lumen Energy, we want to ensure that you receive the most accurate utility and tariff selection for your property. Here's how our technology makes these determinations using publicly available data from utility companies:
How We Determine Your Utility
1. Consult publicly available utility data:
- To find the right utility for your property, we rely on publicly available data from utility companies that list the available utilities in your property's zip code.
2. Choose the top result:
- We prioritize the utility that appears at the top of the publicly available list. This choice is typically based on the number of customers served by each utility, making it the most common utility in your area. However, there's a special consideration for California.
- Important note for California: If your property is in California, we prioritize selecting a Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) if one is available. CCA is a program that helps cities, counties, and certain government groups in areas served by investor-owned utilities (IOUs) to get electricity for their residents and businesses. Properties in these areas are automatically set up to buy electricity through a CCA unless people decide to opt out.
How We Determine Your Tariff
1. Load estimate required:
- We estimate the electricity load of your property based on the building type, region, and size.
2. Gather tariffs
- We compile a list of tariffs from the selected utility that match your property's load category, which can be either commercial or residential.
3. Tariff filtering
To narrow down the options, we filter the tariffs based on specific criteria:
- Minimum and maximum kWh and kW requirements.
- Whether the tariffs require photovoltaic (PV) systems or energy storage.
4. Prioritize based on internal recommendation engine

Once you've provided a past bill or connected us to your utility account, the system no longer needs to make it's best guess. We'll use this information to confirm the analysis is using the accurate tariff for the property.
